Founded by Ruby Karunakaran, our centre is built on a simple belief: every child is unique, and so is the way they learn. That’s why Ruby’s Tuition takes an individualised approach to every programme, tailoring lessons to each child’s pace, strengths, and needs. From early phonics and foundational Maths skills through to GCSE and A-Level, we’ve helped hundreds of students build confidence, close gaps in their learning, and achieve results they’re proud of.
In practice, this means every student begins with a comprehensive assessment, so lessons are shaped around their specific strengths and areas for development — never a one-size-fits-all approach. We don’t just teach to the curriculum; instead, we take the time to understand how each child learns best, adjusting our approach to keep students engaged, motivated, and steadily progressing
Over the past decade, we’ve grown from a small tutoring centre into a trusted name for families across East London, supporting students through key milestones including SATs, the 7+ and 11+ exams, GCSEs, and A-Levels. Many of our students come to us through word of mouth — a reflection of the results and relationships we’ve built with families over the years.

About Ruby Karunakaran
Ruby Karunakaran’s journey back into teaching began after years of working across international development. Before founding what is now Ruby’s Tuition, Ruby worked as a Maths tutor at universities in Sri Lanka, before moving into international humanitarian work, taking on roles with organisations including UNICEF and Save the Children across a number of countries.
As a mother of two daughters, Ruby became increasingly aware of just how important strong literacy and numeracy skills are in giving children the best possible start. Wanting to bring her academic background and teaching experience closer to home, she began tutoring her own children and those of close friends — and quickly saw a marked improvement in their confidence and performance. Word of mouth spread, more parents got in touch, and it wasn’t long before Ruby decided to open a dedicated tutoring centre in Ilford.
Since then, that centre has grown into Ruby’s Tuition — a service built on the same core belief that shaped its beginnings: that every child deserves an individually tailored approach to learning.
“Each child has their own programme, linked to their ability and pace of learning,” says Ruby. “Within just a couple of weeks, children start to develop their own routine, taking small but significant steps in their skill development — and this really helps build their confidence too. You can often see improvement within weeks, but after two to three months, the impact is usually very significant.”
Today, Ruby’s Tuition continues to build on this philosophy, offering personalised, curriculum-linked support in Maths, English, Science, Economics, languages and sociology to students from Reception through to A-Level.
