Key Stage 1 (Reception to Year 2)
English
We use a range of approaches to build strong phonic knowledge, helping children decode words, including longer multi-syllable words, with confidence. This includes dedicated preparation for the year 1 phonics assessment. Alongside this, we develop early comprehension skills through activities such as sequencing events, connecting vocabulary to meaning, and answering questions in full sentences. Starting with cloze exercises, we gradually introduce more complex texts to stretch and challenge each child, building the skills they’ll need for the 7+ and SATs exams. On the writing side, we focus on spelling, vocabulary, and grammar, with weekly handwriting practice and spelling tests. Children learn to apply their grammatical knowledge directly within their writing. As with all our work, class and homework tasks are marked and reviewed with the child so they can learn from their mistakes.
