UCAT Exam Preparation – Part 1: When to Start & The Best Revision Resources

If you’re applying for Medicine or Dentistry in the UK, effective UCAT exam preparation is one of the most important parts of your application. The UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) assesses key skills, including critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving and professionalism.

Many students feel overwhelmed when they begin revising, but with the right strategy and consistent practice, you can maximise your UCAT score.

When Should You Start UCAT Revision?

One of the biggest mistakes students make is leaving revision until the last few weeks before the exam.

Aim to start preparing as soon as you’ve booked your UCAT. Begin with 30–60 minutes of daily practice, focusing on understanding each question type before gradually increasing your workload.

Ideally, give yourself at least two months to prepare. Starting early helps you build confidence, identify weaker sections and improve steadily without burning out. Remember, consistent practice is far more effective than cramming.

Best UCAT Revision Resources

For most students, Medify is one of the best UCAT revision platforms. It offers:

  • Thousands of practice questions
  • Timed mini-mocks
  • Full-length mock exams
  • Detailed answer explanations

Start with untimed practice to learn the question styles, but move on to timed questions fairly quickly. Since the UCAT is heavily time-pressured, speed is just as important as accuracy.

Many students also use MedEntry, which provides similar resources. While I found it slightly harder than the real UCAT, some students enjoy the extra challenge. Whichever platform you choose, reviewing your mistakes is where the biggest improvements happen—not simply completing more questions.

Final Advice

Successful UCAT preparation isn’t about doing the most questions—it’s about learning from every practice session. Build strong foundations, practise consistently and gradually introduce exam conditions to improve both confidence and performance.

In Part 2, we’ll cover proven strategies for each UCAT section, including Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Decision Making and Situational Judgement
